Catalytic Ignition by External Energy Flux: Steady State Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper deals with the steady state catalytic ignition of premixed gases over a flat píate of finite thickness. An external heat flux is added to the píate to facilítate the ignition process. The influence of the finite thermal conductivity of the píate on the catalytic ignition is evaluated in the two distinct limits of the reduced Damkohler number of order of unity and much less than unity. In the case of the reduced Damkohler number of order of unity, the chemical reaction is important over the whole length of the píate. The results obtained previously without external energy flux are reproduced. In the case of the reduced Damkohler number much less than unity, which is of practical interest, the chemical reaction is important only in a narrow zone cióse to the trailing edge, except for very high thermal conductivity of the píate. Analytical expressions are obtained for the critical external heat flux required to produce the catalytic ignition.

Ignition of a Rectangular Solid by an External Heat Flux
The influence of corners on the ignition of a solid exposed to a surface energy flux is analyzed with large activation energy asymptotics. We begin with the analysis of the ignition of semi-infinite wedges by a constant heat flux. Two stages and two spatial zones, reactive and inert, are found. The ignition stage can be described by a slowly convergent asymptotic expansion for the increment in ...
متن کاملIgnition properties of thermally thin plastics: the effectiveness of non-competitive char formation in reducing flammability
The retardancy effect of char formation upon the flammability of thermally thin products is investigated. The char is formed in a single-step non-competitive scheme and is assumed to be thermally stable. The criterion for ignition is that of a critical mass flux of volatiles from the solid into the gas phase. Both steady-state and transient formulations of the model are considered. In the high ...

This paper reports on a study of transient ignition and combustion of hydrogen/air mixtures by a heated, thin catalytic wire in a natural convection environment. Modeling of the process is accomplished via a reduced set of heterogeneous kinetic processes which include dissociative adsorption and desorption of both reactants, three fast surface reactions of the Langmiur-Hinshelwood type, and the...
متن کاملNumerical investigation of wall heat conduction effects on catalytic combustion in split and continuous monolith tubes
The optimum length of a monolith tube is one for which near-hundred percent conversion is attained, and at the same time, the catalyst over the ntire length of the tube is utilized. In practice, the length is adjusted by stacking monolith plugs end-to-end. In this study, the repercussions of uch a practice are investigated numerically with the goal to determine if a tube of length 2L demonstrat...
